Bread bringer dead, things growing tense in Yerevan
YEREVAN, March 17. /ARKA/. Artur Sargsyan, 49, known as bread bringer, died Thursday the Armenia Medical Center.

He is known across Armenia as a man who brought meals to the members of Sasna Tsrer armed group, who seized a police building in Yerevan last July. To do it he rushed through the line of policemen outside the building, putting his life at risk.

Arthur Sargsyan’s death yesterday escalated the situation in Yerevan that was already tense ahead of the parliamentary election and sparked protests.

The protesters gathered outside the prosecutor general office and the justice ministry’s buildings.

Social networks were in a bustle as well. In particular, in Facebook, users posted videos showing the detention of the bread bringer and vented their anger at the authorities calling Arthur the most conscientious Armenian citizen.

There were calls for sit strike and resignation of justice and health ministers.

Artur Sargsyan  was first arrested last August and released in December.

He was arrested again in February 2017, allegedly for not showing up after being summoned to a case hearing.

The bread bringer was released from pre-trial detention on bail only on March 8 after MPs from some political parties filed a petition to the Prosecutor General saying they would guarantee that Sargsyan would not flee.

Before his last release, Arthur has been on hunger strike for 25 days.

The prosecutor general and the health ministry released their preliminary official statement on Arthur Sargsyan’s death saying he died from cardiopulmonary failure.

The prosecutor office received instruction to clarify circumstances of his death.

The health ministry’s press secretary said Sargsyan was brought to the medical center Wednesday evening with the diagnosis ‘umbilical hernia’ and underwent surgery that night.

Intestine blockade and peritoneal inflammation were found out already during the surgery.

Doctors resorted also to another radical surgery and other procedures. In the early post-surgery period, cardiopulmonary failure emerged and all the measures taken by doctors failed to save his life.

Karen Karapetyan, Armenian prime minister, speaking at a pre-election meeting of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, declared that he mourns the death of Arthur Sargsyan and that it is necessary to root out faults in judicial institutions.

Sharmazanov, Karapetyan’s fellow partisan and vice-speaker of the parliament, on his side, made declaration that the death of any Armenian hurts him.

Arman Tatoyan, Armenian ombudsman, demanded maximum transparency in the criminal investigation launched in Sargsyan’s death. --0---
