YEREVAN, May 15. /ARKA/. The Central Electoral Commission has sealed the preliminary results of the Sunday vote in the Yerevan city council election.

Of 842,151 Yerevan residents eligible to vote, 345,158 went to the polls on Sunday.

Tigran Mukuchyan, head of the commission, said that the ruling Republican Party of Armenia has obtained 240,036 votes or 71.25 percent.

As many as 70,731 people or 21.00% cast their votes for YELQ (Way Out) opposition bloc and 26,109 or 7.7 for Yerkir Tsirani (Apricot Country) opposition party.

The city council consists of 65 members, who are elected for four years. They are elected through party lists.

If a party wins 50% of votes, the candidate topping its list is considered the elected mayor.

It means Taron Margaryan, who topped the ruling party’s list, retains its mayoral seat and remains in office. --0---
