Clashes reported between protesters and police in Yerevan

Clashes were reported between opposition activists and the police at the intersection of Halabyan and Arzumanyan streets in Yerevan’s Achapnyak administrative district, some 5 km away from the center of Yerevan.

YEREVAN, April 17. /ARKA/. Clashes were reported between opposition activists and the police at the intersection of Halabyan and Arzumanyan streets in Yerevan’s Achapnyak administrative district, some 5 km away from the center of Yerevan.
Earlier, the leader of protests, MP Nikol Pashinyan, announced that the movement on Halabyan Street was blocked, and the entrance to the Hrazdan Gorge was also blocked. The police were trying to push the protesters from the roadway of the street.
Protests in Armenia have continued for the fifth straight day shutting Yerevan’s downtown. As many as 46 people, including six police officers, were reported injured during a clash on April 16. The protests are aimed at preventing former president Serzh Sargsyan from assuming the position of prime minister.
He resigned as president a week earlier. Armenia’s new constitution approved in a 2015 referendum makes the prime minister the country’s most powerful figure. -0-
