Draft law calls for tougher punishment for election bribes

A set of changes to the Criminal Code of Armenia calling for tougher punishments for electoral bribery is placed on the portal of legal acts.

YEREVAN, August 20. /ARKA/. A set of changes to the Criminal Code of Armenia calling for tougher punishments for electoral bribery is placed on the portal of legal acts. The proposed changes, in particular, suggest electoral bribery be punished with one to three year imprisonment or a penalty in the amount of 500-700 minimum wages (500,000-700,000 drams).
Giving an election bribe in any form, a repeat vote or vote for another person is be punished with a fine of 3,000-5,000 minimum wages (3-4 million drams) or imprisonment for a term of three to five years.
Coercion to vote with use of threats and violence, as well as use of official position is punishable by imprisonment from three to five years.
A voter can avoid criminal liability if informs law enforcement officers about it within five days after receiving a bribe.
In May, the Armenian parliament adopted a string of amendments to the Electoral Code in the second and final reading, providing for tougher punishment for electoral bribery and criminalizing coercion for election campaigning.- 0-
