The European Union and Armenia are now closer than ever, said Anwar El-Anouni, the EU's foreign policy and security spokesman, commenting on the decision taken by the Armenian government to begin the process of joining the EU.

YEREVAN, January 14. /ARKA/. The European Union and Armenia are now closer than ever, said Anwar El-Anouni, the EU's foreign policy and security spokesman, commenting on the decision taken by the Armenian government to begin the process of joining the EU.

"The ongoing discussions highlight the attractiveness of the EU and its values. We have never been as close to Armenia as we are now," he said at a press conference at the European Commission (EC).

El-Anouni reminded that the EU and Armenia have initiated a dialogue on visa liberalization. Furthermore, he noted that the EU has increased its financial assistance to Armenia.

On January 9, the Armenian government approved a project for Armenia’s accession to the EU, proposed by the "Platform of Democratic Forces." At the same time, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia can only become a member of the EU if the people approve this initiative in a referendum.
