Europe Day in Armenia Symbolises Enhanced Partnership and New Perspectives
YEREVAN, May 19. /ARKA/. The European Union Member States and the EU partner countries celebrate Europe Day on 9 May. The motto of the European Union - United in Diversity – demonstrates how different European countries have come together to work for peace and prosperity, while enriched with diverse cultures, traditions and languages.

How it all began 

This year May 9 marks the 71-st anniversary of the "Schumann Declaration", which laid the foundation for a new format of political and economic cooperation in Europe. This historic declaration was presented on 9 May, 1950 by then Foreign Minister Robert Schumann, who set out to create what the European Union is today. 

Robert Schumann proposed a new formula for political cooperation aimed at eliminating ​​war among the European nations through their integration. The Declaration envisaged creation of a peaceful, united and prosperous Europe based on fundamental values ​​and principles. 

Established by six founding member states (the Inner Six) the EU grew to include 27 member states with shared values. 

Europe Day in Armenia

As a long-term and reliable partner of the EU, as well as a member of the Eastern Partnership initiative, Armenia has been hosting Europe Day events for more than a decade. This year Europe Day in Armenia symbolises common values and stronger cooperation with the European Union. 

The activities have been held under the theme of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement and included thematic discussions, cultural activities and regional events in Gyumri and Debet. The activities have been organised in both offline and online formats, in compliance with COVID-19 precautionary measures. 

Europe Day events have featured a series of discussions on road safety, regional development, innovation, tourism and environmental protection, as well as an interactive public projection, photo booths downtown Yerevan and musical performances. The events will culminate with an online concert on 19 May, which will be broadcast via the social media platforms of the EU Delegation. The Embassies of EU Member States also joined the events. 

Armenia-EU: strength in togetherness

The European Union is one of the key partners of Armenia. The EU has been supporting different projects in Armenia across a wide range of areas such as education, agriculture, business, tourism, information technology, innovation and reforms. 

The cooperation between Armenia and the European Union entered a new stage in March 2021, when the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) came into full force. 

What benefits will CEPA bring to Armenia? 

The Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement was signed on 24 November, 2017 within the framework of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Brussels. The CEPA brings the relations between the Republic of Armenia and the European Union to a new level of partnership and regulates the political and economic dialogue. The agreement covers a wide spectrum of areas: justice, security, economy, agriculture, infrastructure, environment, climate, education, science, culture and health. 

The new agreement provides a framework for Armenia and the European Union to work together for the benefit of the citizens of Armenia, to ensure better living standards, a fairer and safer society, a cleaner environment, and more opportunities in education. 

The EU’s support to Armenia

The European Union assists Armenia in the development of agriculture, tourism, information technology, innovation and entrepreneurship among other areas. This fosters the creation of new opportunities and balanced development. 

In 2020, the European Union provided €92 million to Armenia to support immediate and short-term needs. The EU's support in 2020 covered the following priority areas: COVID-19 assistance, good governance and market opportunities. 

The EU in Armenia supports the development of SMEs engaged in agriculture, tourism, information technology and other sectors through the EU4Business Initiative. The EU’s support to SMEs boosts the availability of finance, business development services and creates a more enabling business environment. The EU also provides support through student exchange, mobility, learning and volunteering projects. 

The European Union is committed to provide continued support to Armenia for the development of entrepreneurship, the business environment and investment climate, which, in turn, will contribute to balanced social and economic development. -0-
