Fire extinguishing at Nubarashen landfill hindered by peat masses

YEREVAN, May 24. /ARKA/. Seven fire-fighting teams, eight trucks, six water carriers and eight tractors are still working to put out the fire at Nubarashen landfill located in a Yerevan outskirt.

Chemists from the Department of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Situation Monitoring of the Rescue Service measured the air pollution to find out that the oxygen content in the atmosphere was within the norm.

The fire extinguishing in the landfill is being hampered by peat-like masses formed on its territory, the depth of which reaches 10 meters and more.

In the period from 18 to 24 May, 38 fire brigades, 56 trucks, 26 tractors, 6 excavators and 26 water carriers were involved in efforts to extinguish the fire.

On May 19, the Center for Hydrometeorology and Monitoring of the Ministry of Environment reported that due to the fire at Nubarashen landfill such harmful pollutants as dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and other pollutants may pollute the air.

On May 22, Yerevan Mayor's advisor Kamo Areyan said it would take another week to extinguish the fire at Nubarashen landfill. -0-
