YEREVAN, February 16. /ARKA/. The chairman of an Armenian parliamentary committee on state and legal issues and protection of human rights Hrayr Tovmasyan, who has resigned today and has been nominated by his Republican Party of Armenia for the position of a member of the Constitutional Court, said today he may be elected chairman of the Constitutional Court.

If elected he will replace Gagik Harutyunyan, who will turn 70 in late March and will no longer qualify for the job.

"Each member of the Constitutional Court has the right to be elected as its chairman," Tovmasyan said.
Constitutional Court judges are elected by the National Assembly for a period of 12 years. They need to be endorsed by at least three fifths of the total number of deputies.

The Constitutional Court consists of nine judges, three of whom are elected at the proposal of the president, three are nominated by the government and another three are nominated by the General Meeting of Judges. Judges remain in office until the age of seventy.

The Constitutional Court elects the chairman and vice-chairman from among its members for a period of six years without the right to re-election. -0-
