Human rights activists warns against Armenia's possible withdrawal from lawsuits filed against Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, April 1. /ARKA/. The head of the Center for International and Comparative Law, human rights activist Siranush Sahakyan warned against Armenia's possible withdrawal from lawsuits filed against Azerbaijan.
"The situation is asymmetrical. If there were bilateral aggression, crimes and ethnic cleansing on both sides, then perhaps this would be acceptable. But, unfortunately, we are in an unequal, asymmetrical situation, and symmetrical solutions will inevitably breed injustice," she told a a press conference on Monday.
She pointed out that according to the regulations of some international structures, only states can be plaintiffs, and this significantly affects the legal processes. For example, she noted that individuals cannot appeal to the UN International Court of Justice, whose decisions are binding.
According to Sahakyan, the Azerbaijani authorities are putting pressure on Armenia to drop the lawsuits because the time for making decisions on some of them is approaching.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan did not rule out the possibility of withdrawing Armenia's lawsuits against Azerbaijan from international courts.
On behalf of Armenia, 4 interstate complaints against Azerbaijan are pending at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in connection with crimes committed in the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh(September-November 2020); illegal trials of captured Armenians in Azerbaijan; armed attacks and occupation of sovereign Armenian territory by Azerbaijani armed forces (May 2021. - November 2022); blockade of the Lachin corridor (December 2022 - September 2023) and violation of the rights of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.
In addition, Armenia's lawsuit demanding the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination by Azerbaijan due to years of propaganda of hatred and Armenophobia at the state level is pending before the UN International Criminal Court (ICC). -0-
