Humanitarian catastrophe arises in Artsakh because of Azerbaijan's closure of Lachin corridor - Armenian prime minister
YEREVAN, December 15. /ARKA/. The closure of the Lachin corridor, which is the only road connecting Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and Armenia by Azerbaijan has caused a humanitarian disaster in Artsakh, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a government meeting on Thursday.
"The humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh has become extremely severe in recent days. Azerbaijan has blocked the Lachin corridor and disrupted the gas pipeline that supplies natural gas to Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia," he said.
According to him, as a result of these provocative actions, people in Nagorno-Karabakh lost their right to move freely, facing difficulties with heating their homes in winter, thousands of people, including children, were left on the roads.
Pashinyan noted that citizens with serious health problems are deprived of medicine and health care services, while supplies of food and other essentials are interrupted.
Some 120,000 people in the blockade are being actually held hostage. Schools and kindergartens heated by gas stopped working, as a result about 22 thousand children are deprived of the right to education.
"The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh cannot be called anything other than a humanitarian catastrophe. The crisis arose as a result of Azerbaijan's failure to comply with its international obligations," he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that the closure of the Lachin corridor is a direct and gross violation of the trilateral statement of November 9, 2020. He said that Azerbaijan's violations of this statement are of a chronic nature. -0-
