Iran rejects so-called 'Zangezur corridor' - ambassador
YEREVAN, September 6. /ARКА/. Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani once again reiterated his country's strong objection to the so-called "Zangezur corridor" that would connect Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through the southern Armenian region of Syunik, which borders Iran.
The so-called "Zangezur corridor" cannot become a reality. The dreams that some see about Armenia, including the so-called "corridor", will not become a reality. I emphasize once again that Iran supports the territorial integrity, national sovereignty and independence of Armenia, and its territorial integrity is a "red line" for us," Sobhani told reporters in Yerevan on Friday, Tert.am reports.
On the possible transfer of control over the road to a private security company, Sobhani said that Iran is against this road being controlled by representatives of other countries. He said that all events related to this road should be within the framework of Armenia’s sovereignty.
“Any control should be on the part of the Republic of Armenia, and we are against people from other countries coming here and trying to ensure security and control,” the ambassador noted.
As for the possible functions of a private security company, the ambassador noted that, according to his information, it is not about ensuring security, but about commercial companies that will be able to ensure the presence of their representative on the road during the transportation of goods.
“According to my information, the security and control of the road will be ensured by the Armenian government,” Sobhani said.-0-
