YEREVAN, December 16. /ARKA/. Several dozen Armenian servicemen deployed in the village of Khtsaberd of Hadrut region of Nagorno-Karabakh were captured by the Azerbaijani side, Nagorno-Karabakh president Arayik Harutyunyan said today, adding that the ministry of defense was investigating all the circumstances of that incident.
“I personally will be consistent that those responsible for this incident be subjected to legal responsibility. The soldiers' quick and safe return to their homeland must be at the center of all our efforts, and we are already taking steps in that direction,” he said in a Facebook post.
According to Harutyunyan, the Azerbaijani side continues its usual provocative behavior, one of the striking examples of which was their actions in recent days in the Khtsaberd and Berdadzor sections.
“Servicemen of the Karabakh defense army and Russian peacekeepers prevented a number of provocations of Azerbaijani soldiers, and yesterday evening they pushed them out of the approaches to the village of Hin Shen near Shushi. During these days, not a single person was injured in the direction of Berdadzor, and the enemy was not allowed to occupy any settlement,” he said.
The president stated that, given the peacekeeping mandate assumed by Russia in Artsakh, it is obvious that violations of the provisions of the November 9 statement on cessation of hostilities and the current line of contact are a clear disrespectful attitude to both Russia's mediation efforts and its peacekeeping mandate.
“Therefore, together with the military-political leadership of Armenia, we are working with the Russian side to jointly prevent Azerbaijani provocations. And the defense army simultaneously fulfills its obligations within the framework of the available capabilities,” Harutyunyan said.
From September 27 to November 9, Azerbaijani armed forces, backed by Turkey and foreign mercenaries and terrorists, attacked Nagorno-Karabakh along the entire front line using rocket and artillery weapons, heavy armored vehicles, military aircraft and prohibited types of weapons such as cluster bombs and phosphorus weapons.
On November 9, the leaders of the Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a statement on the cessation of all hostilities in Artsakh. According to the document, the parties stopped at where they were at that time. The town of Shushi, the districts of Agdam, Kelbajar and Lachin were handed over to Azerbaijan, with the exception of a 5-kilometer corridor connecting Karabakh with Armenia.
A Russian peacekeeping contingent has been deployed along the contact line in Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor. Internally displaced persons and refugees are returning to Karabakh and adjacent regions, prisoners of war, hostages and other detained persons and bodies of the dead are being exchanged.--0-
