YEREVAN, September 26. /ARKA/. Armenia’s deputy parliament speaker Eduard Sharmazanov proposed today to rename the ministry of diaspora to the ministry of diaspora and repatriation, saying its main objective should be bringing ethnic Armenians back to their homeland.
The ministry of diaspora was founded on the basis of the diaspora committee at the ministry of foreign affairs and became part of the government in 2008.
Justice minister Arpine Hovhannisyan, who presented to lawmakers a set of proposed changes in the structure of government, said the proposal is acceptable and it will be submitted to the government’s consideration.
The Armenian diaspora is believed to number 7-8 million people, more than double the population of Armenia. The largest Armenian community is in Russia (over 2.5 million), the US (over 1 million), France (500,000), Lebanon (120 000) and Iran (80,000). -0-
