Moscow and Yerevan continue to support inter-parliamentary dialogue, including in multilateral formats - Matviyenko

YEREVAN, June 6. /ARKA/. Russia attaches great importance to inter-parliamentary cooperation with fraternal Armenia and its people, our ally, said the Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko.

"It is gratifying that Moscow and Yerevan continue to support inter-parliamentary dialogue, including in multilateral formats," she said on Friday at the 39th meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the National Assembly of Armenia and the Federation Council of the Russian Federation in Yerevan.

According to her, parliamentarians of the two countries actively cooperate in the IPA CIS, within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

"We also welcome the interest of parliamentarians of Armenia in the parliamentary dimension of BRICS. Nothing brings our peoples together like the desire for communication, friendship, and it must be said that citizens of Russia and Armenia willingly establish business, cultural, and simply human ties. At the same time, the Russian language remains the language of interethnic communication," Matviyenko said.

The head of the Federation Council also said that a solid historical base is the foundation on which bilateral ties between the countries are built and developed.

"Our meeting today is special, it is significant, 2025 in the Commonwealth of Independent States has been declared the Year of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Year of Peace and Unity in the Fight against Nazism," Matviyenko noted.

She said that about 600 thousand Armenians fought on the fronts, more than a hundred sons of the Armenian people were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, almost 30 became full Cavaliers of Glory, 5 Marshals of the Soviet Union.

"The opening of the Museum of the famous military leader Ivan Khristoforovich Baghramyan in Yerevan in the anniversary year was a landmark event. We consider it important that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Vovaevich Pashinyan participated in the anniversary celebrations in Moscow, and the presence of veterans from Armenia in the parade stands was especially significant. It is symbolic that in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, the "Immortal Regiment" action in Yerevan became a record-breaking event in terms of the number of participants, and here I cannot help but note the interest of Armenian schoolchildren in the cultural and educational event "Train of Memory", which was organized under the auspices of the Interparliamentary Assembly. All this emphasizes the connection between generations, the respect of the residents of the Republic of Armenia for the feat of Soviet soldiers during the war," Matviyenko said. -0-
