Moscow disagrees with Pashinyan regarding his assessment of CSTO threat to Armenia – Peskov

YEREVAN, September 18 /ARKA/. Moscow disagrees with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in his assessment of the CSTO; this organization does not pose a threat to Armenia, said Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

Pashinyan, speaking at the Second World Armenian Summit on Wednesday, said that the CSTO is not fulfilling its defense obligations to Armenia and is creating threats to its security, existence, sovereignty and statehood.

"We are talking about issues that fall within the scope of Armenia's sovereign rights: Armenia itself chooses strategic and tactical paths of development, but at the same time, of course, we must categorically disagree with Mr. Pashinyan," the Kremlin spokesman told reporters.

"The CSTO cannot and does not pose any danger, any threat to the sovereignty of Armenia; on the contrary, this organization stands guard over the sovereignty of its member states," TASS (Russian news agency) quotes Peskov as saying.

In February 2024, Armenia announced the freezing of its membership in the CSTO, and later also refused to pay membership fees to the organization.

On June 12, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the next logical step in relations with the CSTO would be leaving the organization, but soon afterwards Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan made a statement that the Prime Minister meant that the Armenian authorities themselves would decide when to leave the organization. -0-
