Opposition begins to block streets in Armenian capital

YEREVAN, May 2, / ARKA/. Small groups of opposition supporters began today morning blocking streets in downtown Yerevan and other parts of the Armenian capital as part of the opposition’s declared ‘campaign of civil disobedience’ in another push to step up the pressure on the Armenian government and make Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resign.
After the Sunday rally the opposition Hayastan and Pativ Unem alliances blocked the French Square in the city center, an intersection of several major avenues and pitched several tents there. Some of opposition supporters spent the night on the square
According to Ishkhan Saghatelyan, the deputy speaker of the National Assembly, representing the opposition Hayastan alliance, 14 streets have already been blocked.
In particular, groups of protesters have already blocked the traffic at the intersection of Pushkin Street and Mashtots Avenue, on Arshakunyats Avenue and were trying to block Tigran Mets Avenue.
In some places, police officers have pushed the protesters out of the roadway and removed the blocking cars. Groups of protesters leave their cars right on the roadway and go to block other streets. -0-
