YEREVAN, April 17. /ARKA/. Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan said he and his supporters will organize today ‘the largest ever protest rally in the history of Armenia’ on Republic Square in central Yerevan.

"The Republic Square will be full of people today at 6.30 pm. It will be the biggest rally in the history of Armenia," he said.

Earlier today Nikol Pashinyan announced that start of the velvet revolution in Armenia. "I officially declare that a revolutionary situation has arisen in Armenia, and today I am announcing the beginning of a peaceful velvet revolution," Pashinyan said to his supporters.

Protests in Armenia have continued for the fifth straight day shutting Yerevan’s downtown. As many as 46 people, including six police officers, were reported injured during a clash on April 16. The protests are aimed at preventing former president Serzh Sargsyan from assuming the position of prime minister. He resigned as president a week earlier. Armenia’s new constitution approved in a 2015 referendum makes the prime minister the country’s most powerful figure.

Currently the parliament is having a special session to elect Serzh Sargsyan as next prime minister. Sargsyan was nominated by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia and its junior coalition partner – the Armenian Revolutionary Federation/ Dashnaktsutyun. -0-
