YEREVAN, November 6. /ARKA/. The opening of the railway connection between Russia and Armenia through Azerbaijan and Georgia has become a tangible contribution to establishing peace in the South Caucasus, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk told reporters.

Last night, the first shipment of wheat from Russia was delivered to Armenia via the new transport route.

"We welcome the opening of railway connection between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia through the Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgia," the Deputy Prime Minister said. He noted that for the first time since the Republic of Armenia gained independence, there is direct rail service between the two countries.

According to Overchuk, this event has become "a real, tangible contribution to establishing peace in the South Caucasus," and also evidence of Russia's work for regional stability and the economic development of all states in the region.

Overchuk emphasized that the new route strengthens Russia's transport links with countries in the region, increases accessibility to Armenian markets for goods from other Eurasian Economic Union member states, and improves accessibility to the union's markets for Armenian producers.

"It is symbolic that the first cargo to travel along this route was Russian grain—one of the most important symbols of life and creation, which once again underscores the shared desire to establish peace in the South Caucasus and move from confrontation to cooperation," Overchuk added.

According to him, the opening of the new railway line is a result of agreements reached by the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan in 2020 and 2021, as well as the efforts of a trilateral working group co-chaired by the deputy prime ministers of the three countries.

"I would like to thank my colleagues, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Mher Grigoryan, for their joint efforts to unblock transport links in the South Caucasus region, as well as Georgia for its constructive participation in organizing transportation along this route," the Deputy Prime Minister concluded.
