YEREVAN, September 9. /ARAKA/. Pakistan intends to recognize Armenia as a UN member state, for which it will receive a green light to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), TASS sources reported.

"Pakistan really plans to do this, and as a reciprocal step - to get consensus on the issue of joining the EAEU," one of the agency's interlocutors in the UN said.

Another diplomatic source noted that the relevant procedures could take from several weeks to several months. "In any case, this is a foreseeable prospect," the interlocutor added. He also stressed that the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan left no obstacles in this matter.

On August 31, on the sidelines of the SCO summit in China, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar held talks, following which they signed a communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Since Armenia declared independence, it has not had diplomatic relations with Pakistan due to Islamabad's position on the Karabakh conflict. Moreover, for many years, Pakistan has been described as a threat to national security in Armenia's national security doctrine.
