Pashinyan calls Armenia's Declaration of Independence "a big problem and tragedy"

YEREVAN, November 14. /ARKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called the Declaration of Independence "a big problem and tragedy.

"In recent years, I have reread the Declaration of Independence dozens of times and come to the alarming conclusion that the essence of this Declaration is that the Republic of Armenia cannot exist. This is our greatest problem and tragedy. The question now is: what is the real Armenia, and who is its citizen? A citizen of real Armenia is someone who does not seek a homeland or fatherland outside this land," Pashinyan said, speaking in parliament.

Earlier, Pashinyan stated that Armenia needs a new constitution to make the country more competitive and viable in the changing geopolitical landscape. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, on January 17, dismissed the claim that the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement process is the reason for amending the constitution as an exaggeration. He also confirmed that Azerbaijan sees issues with Armenia's Declaration of Independence.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that peace between the two countries could be achieved if Armenia ends its territorial claims against Azerbaijan and amends its Constitution and other legal documents. He argued that Armenia's Declaration of Independence contains direct calls for the unification of Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia and for violating Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, and that references to this document are also included in Armenia's Constitution. -0-
