As of 20:00 local time, 345,263 people or 40.99 of the total number of voters went to the polls to elect a Yerevan City Council, Tigran Mukuchyan, the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), reported.

YEREVAN, May 14. /ARKA/. As of 20:00 local time, 345,263 people or 40.99 of the total number of voters went to the polls to elect a Yerevan City Council, Tigran Mukuchyan, the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), reported. 

Elections to the City Council of Yerevan, held in the Armenian capital on Sunday, ended at 20:00 and all 474 polling stations that operated on the territory of Yerevan were closed.

According to the new Constitution of Armenia, the Yerevan Council of Elders is elected for a five year term, up from current 4 years. The Council of Elders consists of 65 people, who are elected solely by party lists. If a party or an alliance of parties gains more than 50% of the vote, the first number in the party list becomes automatically mayor of Yerevan. Otherwise, the mayor is to be chosen by the Council of Elders.

The ruling party’s proportional list was headed by the acting mayor Taron Margaryan. The list of the Yelk bloc was headed by a parliament member Nikol Pashinyan, and the list of Yerkir Tsirani was led by its founder Zaruhi Postanjyan. --0--
