Preliminary concept of new Constitution sent to government-minister
YEREVAN, March 26. /ARKA/. The preliminary concept of a new Constitution has been sent to the Armenian government, Justice Minister Grigor Minasyan said Tuesday.
"Nevertheless, the issue of making amendments to the preliminary concept of the new Constitution has not been discussed yet. Only the part that we have all seen in the press has been discussed," Minasyan told reporters in parliament.
He also commented on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's recent statements on the issue.
"We are waiting for the Prime Minister to inform the commission (on constitutional reforms - ed.) and the Constitutional Council. After that, we will inform whether there are any ideological changes in one direction or another," the minister said.
On January 19, Pashinyan said that Armenia needs a new Constitution, which will make the country more competitive and viable in the new geopolitical conditions.
On February 1, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that peace between the two countries can be achieved if Armenia puts an end to its territorial claims against Azerbaijan and amends the Constitution and other legal documents.
According to him, Armenia's Declaration of Independence contains direct calls for the unification of Karabakh with Armenia and violation of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, and references to this document are also reflected in the Armenian Constitution. --0--
