Presidential and parliamentary elections start in Karabakh

On March 31, 2020, nationwide presidential and parliamentary elections started in the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) - 14 presidential candidates and 12 parties and political blocs are racing in the elections.

At 08:00, 280 polling stations opened in Stepanakert all seven provinces of Artsakh. One of the voting sites is located in Yerevan and another in the Shushi Penitentiary. Voting will end at 20:00.

According to the Artsakh police, as of March 30 of this year, the total number of voters in Artsakh included in the register is 103,663.

A new Constitution will also come into force, according to which a transition from a mixed form of government to a presidential one is carried out, and the powers of the head of state are expanded.

Some 963 local observers and 231 media representatives are accredited to the elections. As many as 140 foreign observers from 38 countries of the world and 40 representatives of foreign media, despite the permission received, will not be able to take part in the observation mission due to travel restrictions imposed because of the spread of COVID 19.

All polling stations of Stepankert and the regions are equipped with special video surveillance cameras that will allow monitoring the voting process without violating the secrecy of the vote.

Citizens and all participants in the electoral process will be provided with disposable masks, gloves and pens in compliance with the rules of epidemiological safety at Artsakh polling stations. They will be provided at the entrances to polling stations. The Central Electoral Commission calls on citizens to keep their distance and avoid large crowds when voting.

Televised debates held among presidential candidates yesterday for the first time in Artsakh’s history, in which 12 out of 14 candidates participated.

Ruslan Israelyan (from the Generation of Independence Party), Vitaliy Balasanyan (Justice), David Babayan (Conservative Artsakh Party), David Ishkhanian (ARF Dashnaktsutyun), Ashot Gulyan (Democratic Party of Artsakh) run for the presidency of Artsakh ), Hayk Khanumyan (“National Revival”), Araik Harutyunyan (block of parties “Free Homeland-United Civil Block”), Vahan Badasyan (“United Armenia”), as well as self-nominated people - Masis Mayilyan, Sergey Amiryan, Kristin Balayan, Bella Lalayan , Melsik Poghosyan and Ashot Dadayan are racing for the presidential seat.

The Free Homeland - EGA bloc, the New Artsakh bloc, the United Motherland, National Revival, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, Justice, Generation of Independence, Artsakh Conservative Party are going to participate in parliamentary elections Artsakh Democratic Party, United Armenia, Artsakh Revolutionary Party, Communist Party of Nagorno-Karabakh are racing for seats in the parliament. -0-
