YEREVAN, August 19. /ARKA/. Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Azerbaijan visited August 19 an Armenian soldier who was taken prisoner by Azerbaijani forces near Nagorno-Karabakh last week.
The news was confirmed by the Armenian office of ICRC. No details of the meeting were provided.
The 19-year-old conscript, Arayik Ghazaryan, was detained after crossing the Armenian-Azerbaijani “line of contact” around Karabakh in still unclear circumstances.
Azerbaijani mass media claimed that Ghazaryan deserted his unit because of being systematically mistreated by his comrades. however, this was denied by Armenian Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan who said the soldier might have strayed into Azerbaijani-controlled territory by accident.
Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) ombudsman Artak Beglaryan welcomed the ICRC visit. "I hope that with assistance of ICRC representatives, the protection of the rights of our soldier in Azerbaijan will be guaranteed," Beglaryan wrote in his Facebook.
He said he was in constant touch with the head of Karabakh office of ICRC mission, Pierre-Emanuel Ducruet and was ready to contribute to a favorable resolution of the situation. -0-
