YEREVAN, May 11. /ARKA/. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation/ Dashnaktsutyun (ARF) have signed a coalition agreement today for 2017-2022, HHK  deputy chairman Armen Ashotyan announced. He said the signing ceremony took place at the residence of the president of Armenia.

According to Ashotyan, the coalition will focus on the fight against corruption, strengthening of the armed forces, the reform of the legal system, as well as the development of a competitive economy and human rights institutions.

In his turn, ARF member Aghvan Vardanyan noted that the agreement is to be effective up to the next parliamentary elections, to take place in 2022. He said the coalition is based on three core values - the security of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, economic development and radical reforms.

The Republican Party of Armenia has been in power since 1999. It has been chaired since 2007 by president Serzh Sargsyan.

ARF - one of the oldest Armenian parties- was part of the ruling coalition from 2003 to 2009.  It walked out of the coalition protesting against the signing in October 2009 of the Armenian-Turkish protocols on the normalization of bilateral relations, which were never implemented. In February 2016, the two parties signed a coalition agreement and declared their readiness for long-term cooperation.

In the April 2 parliamentary elections the Republican Party of Armenia won 58 mandates in the 105-member National Assembly (55.2%). The Tsarukyan bloc won 31 seats, the opposition Yelk bloc won 9 seats and ARF won 7 seats. -0-
