YEREVAN, April 25. /ARKA/. The leader of the parliamentary faction of the Republican Party of Armenia Vahram Baghdasaryan told reporters after an emergency meeting of the faction that the party is united and will express its opinion on the deepening political crisis.
"We have the majority of seats in the National Assembly and we will present a decision concerning our candidate (for the prime minister’s post). Karen Karapetyan is currently the acting prime minister. He is doing his job. There are no disagreements in the party," Baghdasaryan said.
Protests against the ruling Republican Party of Armenia resumed today morning in the capital Yerevan and then expanding throughout the country with thousands taking to the streets after protest leader Nikol Pashinyan accused the government of refusing to negotiate a peaceful transfer of power following the resignation of prime minister Serzh Sargsyan.
Serzh Sargsyan, who had previously served as president for a decade, was forced to step down on Monday.
Pashinyan, the leader of the Civil Contract Party, and the acting prime minister Karen Karapetyan were to hold talks today morning to discuss a “peaceful” power transfer. But the talks were cancelled. After Pashinyan accused the authorities of wanting to nominate a Republican Party candidate for prime minister, warning the opposition would boycott snap parliamentary elections in that case.
Pashinyan insists the new premier must be a “people’s candidate” and not a member of the ruling party. He told reporters late on April 24 that he was ready to take up that position. -0-
