Armenia and Turkey to look into reopening of Gyumri-Kars railway line

A meeting involving the inter-agency commissions of Armenia and Turkey is scheduled to occur shortly to deliberate on the reopening of the Gyumri-Kars railway line, Ruben Rubinyan, Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, told a press briefing on Tuesday.

YEREVAN, October 21. /ARKA/. A meeting involving the inter-agency commissions of Armenia and Turkey is scheduled to occur shortly to deliberate on the reopening of the Gyumri-Kars railway line, Ruben Rubinyan, Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, told a press briefing on Tuesday.

He indicated that the specifics regarding the meeting's location and date will be disclosed at a later time and mentioned that discussions concerning the reopening of the border are currently in progress.

On the Armenian-Turkish dialogue

Armenia and Turkey have not maintained diplomatic relations since 1991, and the state border has remained closed since 1993 due to Ankara's initiative. In December 2021, Armenia and Turkey designated their representatives to facilitate the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations - Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, Ruben Rubinyan, and the seasoned diplomat, former Turkish Ambassador to the United States, Serdar Kilic.

On September 12, Rubinyan and Kilic held their 6th meeting in Yerevan, confirming the previously agreed intentions to advance the process of full normalization of relations between the countries.

They agreed to accelerate the implementation of the agreement on crossing the land border by third-country nationals and persons with diplomatic passports, reached at the meeting on July 1, 2022, to conduct the necessary technical studies for the restoration and operation of the Gyumri-Kars railway and power line, and to increase the number of flights between the two countries.-0-
