Ruling majority not opposed to lifting martial law

YEREVAN, March 23. /ARKA/. The Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan indicated today that the ruling My Step majority will endorse the third in a row motion of the two opposition parties- the Bright Armenia and the Prosperous Armenia - to abolish the martial law that was declared after Azerbaijan's aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh last September 27.

The two opposition parties represented in the National Assembly say the martial law is no longer necessary after a Russian-brokered ceasefire that stopped the bloody war in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone on November 10, 2020.

According to Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the Bright Armenia, preserving the martial law is an obstacle for political parties, especially that the parliament-represented forces have agreed to hold snap polls on June 20.

"The ongoing martial law restricts the rights of the opposition in particular, and democracy in general,' Marukyan said.

Speaker of the National Assembly Ararat Mirzoyan proposed , taking into account the achievement of a political agreement on holding early polls to resolve the political crisis to support the motion and organize a vote for the abolition of the martial law.

'Now, it makes no sense to ask the government to submit a relevant proposal, ”Mirzoyan said. -0-
