YEREVAN, September 29. /ARKA/. Russia is doing everything possible to stop the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh and bring the situation back to the peaceful course, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin told reporters on Tuesday.

“All official comments have been made: Russia has been very active in trying to de-escalate the conflict. Our position is clear: hostilities must end and the parties must return to the negotiation process. There are no alternatives to a peaceful solution based on compromises,” he said.

According to the ambassador, Russia's traditional role in this conflict is to prevent its escalation and also thwart a destabilizing influence from the outside, which is important for creating conditions  for a mutually acceptable peaceful solution of the conflict.

“Russia is doing everything, including in cooperation with other co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, so that the escalation is stopped, so that the parties can return to the negotiating table for a peaceful solution,” Kopyrkin said.

He said that Russia is in active contact with all the parties to the conflict. Prime Minister of Armenia had a conversation with the President of the Russian Federation, the Foreign Ministers communicate with each other, and there is communication with the Azerbaijani and Turkish sides.

Regarding the CSTO response and the possible involvement of the 102nd Russian military base in the fighting after Azerbaijan began shelling the Armenian territory, the ambassador said that the CSTO's response was voiced by its Secretary General. Regarding the Russian military base deployed in Armenian Gyumri, the ambassador said this question should be addressed to the military.

In a related development,  Russian TASS news agency quoted Russian president’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov as saying that the situation along the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh is a subject for serious analysis within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

"This current situation, the ongoing hostilities along the contact line are a subject for profound analysis within the Organization. In all other respects, I would refrain from comments only because it is a very sensitive matter requiring utter accuracy and caution," he said.

"First of all, it is necessary to analyze the situation," he stressed. Peskov did not say though whether the Russian side thinks that the issue requires some response. "I would rather refrain from any comments on that matter now," he repeated.-0-
