YEREVAN, March 6. /ARKA/. Russia's border service in Armenia is ready to foil any provocation on the border ahead of the centenary of Armenian Genocide, Major General Vyacheslav Biryukov, the chief of the border service, said Friday at a news conference.

He was quoted by Novosti-Armenia as saying that the border service will take measures to prevent any border provocation ahead of the commemoration day.

Biryukov said that the border service is now communicating with the Turkish side.

«We are communicating also with border areas' residents to avoid provocations,» he said. «Our duty is defend borders and prevent incidents.» Armenia's border with Turkey (330 kilometers) and with Iran (45 kilometers) is guarded by Russian Security Service's troops in accordance with an interstate agreement on Russian troops' status in Armenia's territory, which was signed on September 30, 1992.

The Armenian authorities attach great importance to Russia's border service and Russia's military base in Gyumri.

The border service consists of four units deployed in Gyumri, Armavir, Artashat and Meghri. Maintenance of Russian border guards in Armenia (about 4,500) is borne by both countries on fifty-fifty principle. ---0----
