YEREVAN, December 31. /ARKA/. On Tuesday, a court in Yerevan unexpectedly decided to place Samvel Karapetyan, the Russian-Armenian billionaire who was arrested in June, under house arrest.
The Prosecutor General's Office has reportedly stated that it will challenge this decision, which comes just over a month after the same court had extended Karapetyan's pretrial detention for an additional two months. An appeals court confirmed this extension last week.
Karapetyan's attorney, Aram Vartevanyan, mentioned that his client intends to post bail prior to being moved to house arrest. Vartevanyan did not reveal the bail amount set by the judge. Later that evening, Karapetyan was released from the central prison in Yerevan.
Karapetyan was taken into custody on June 18, shortly after he criticized Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's efforts to oust the top clergy of the Armenian Apostolic Church, pledging to defend it "in our own way."
He has also faced allegations of economic offenses, including significant tax evasion and money laundering. Karapetyan refutes all three accusations.-0-
