YEREVAN, June 26. /ARКА/. Lawyers representing businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan released a statement addressing what they perceive as unfair legal practices related to their appeal against the arrest of their client.
According to the statement, Karapetyan's arrest on June 18, 2025, stemmed from a demonstrably baseless and unlawful court ruling. Subsequently, his legal representation filed an appeal with Judge Armen Danielyan, known for his poor performance record, on June 20, 2025.
Considering these factors and others, Samvel Karapetyan's legal team submitted a motion to dismiss the appeal on June 23, 2025. The motion asserts that within this timeframe, it became unequivocally evident that every possible effort was made to ensure Armen Danielyan addressed the complaint concerning Samvel Karapetyan's unlawful detention.
Initially, Armen Danielyan, bound by the need to swiftly conclude the case, intentionally chose inaction. Subsequently, the prosecutor's office lodged an appeal despite the investigator's motion being fully met, rendering the appeal unnecessary. This entire sequence of events was orchestrated solely to ensure that Armen Danielyan, at all costs, remained the judge overseeing the complaint's investigation.
At the same time, Armen Danielyan did not stop there. Today (June 26), the judge of the Criminal Court of Appeal sent a decision according to which he accepted the prosecutor's complaint for proceedings, but also set a new bar for violating the law - the complaint of a group of lawyers was also accepted for proceedings, on which a motion for withdrawal was submitted.
Moreover, the defense was given only one day to present its position, and the date of the announcement of the judicial act was set for July 4, 2025," the statement says.
The team of lawyers notes that the illegal arrest of Samvel Karapetyan, the outrageous process of appealing it and the behavior of state bodies leave no doubt for any objective observer about the obvious and direct presence of political persecution.
The reason for the detention of Samvel Karapetyan was the businessman's statement in connection with the conflict that arose between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Garegin II.
In his address to the press, the businessman stated that he had always been on the side of the Armenian Church and the Armenian people, and if politicians do not succeed, then "we are ready to participate in all this in our own way."-0-
