Sargsyan to travel to Moscow to strengthen economic cooperation
YEREVAN, March 1. /ARKA/. Serzh Sargsyan, Armenian president, will fly to Moscow on March 14 for a two-day official visit, Russia’s Izvestia reports referring to a source from Sargsya’s administration.

The information was confirmed also by Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Armenian president is set to meet with his Russian counterpart in Moscow, the Russian media resource reports.

Vladimir Hakobyan, Sargsyan’s spokesman, commenting on this publication at the Novosti-Armenia request, said information about the president’s visits is provided properly and on time.

According to this media resource, cooperation between the two countries and the situation in Nagorno Karabakh are among the issues on the meeting’s agenda.

Some sources close to the Armenian authorities, said that a number of investment agreements will be signed as a result of Sargsyan’s visit.

The Russian and the Armenian presidents will meet as part of the events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties between the countries.

Dmitry Peskov is quoted by Izvestia as saying that preparations for the visit are under way.

Sargsyan’s visit comes after a series of Armenian high-ranking officials’ visits to Moscow – Vigen Sargsyan, the new defense minister, traveled to the Russian capital in late November 2016, Karen Karapetyan, prime minister, visited it in January and the two countries’ foreign ministers met in February.

According to Izvestia, some political, military and economic agreements are expected to be signed by the two countries’ presidents in Moscow.

The media resource quoted Yury Navoyan, an Armenian political analyst, as saying that the Armenian society reacted positively to the new government’s repeated declarations about economic changes and is waiting for crucial projects now.

“It is obvious that it is impossible to implement such reforms without cooperation with Moscow,” he told Izvestia. “During Sargsyan’s visit, large investment projects will be proposed, in which Russian and Armenian businesses will be involved.”

In his words, Russia plays a major part in Armenia’s security and military cooperation will be discussed at the meeting as well.

But the key issue on the agenda will be the situation in Nagorno Karabakh. Both Baku and Yerevan have repeatedly stressed the importance of Moscow’s role in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandyan had 20 meetings in 2016 and every time they discussed things in Karabakh.

“The South Caucasus is a turbulent region,” Navoyan said. “Things remain difficult amid the unsettled Karabakh conflict. Russia is one of the OSCE Minsk Group countries that broker the conflict settlement.

The two countries’ stances remain unchanged – the problem can be solved only by peaceful means, through negotiations. The threat of escalation of local conflict still remains.” --0----
