Second round of presidential election launched in Artsakh

On April 14, the second round of the presidential election started in Artsakh. On March 31, parliamentary elections and the first round of the presidential election were held in Artsakh. As a result, none of the 14 candidates won the 50 + 1 vote necessary for victory. Two candidates with the largest number of votes are racing in the second round: Arayik Harutyunyan (Bloc of Free Motherland-United Civil Block parties), who won 49.6%, and self-nominated candidate Masis Mayilyan, for whom 26.4% cast their votes.

YEREVAN, April 14. /ARKA/. On April 14, the second round of the presidential election started in Artsakh. On March 31, parliamentary elections and the first round of the presidential election were held in Artsakh. As a result, none of the 14 candidates won the 50 + 1 vote necessary for victory. Two candidates with the largest number of votes are racing in the second round: Arayik Harutyunyan (Bloc of Free Motherland-United Civil Block parties), who won 49.6%, and self-nominated candidate Masis Mayilyan, for whom 26.4% cast their votes.
At 08:00 in all seven provinces of the republic and Stepanakert, all 280 polling stations opened. One of the sites is located in Yerevan and another in the Shushi Penitentiary Facility. Voting will end at 20:00.
According to the Artsakh police, as of March 30 of this year, the total number of voters in Artsakh included in the register is 103,663.
One of the candidates, Mailyan, on April 5 called for a boycott of the elections in the face of the growing threat of an epidemic of a new coronavirus. He also noted that the elections held on March 31 were very far from the public expectations of Artsakh in the new conditions.
Elections in emergency situations
The election is being held under the state of emergency declared one day before because of the spread of coronavirus.
In this connection, Bako Sahakyan, president of Artsakh, expressed confidence that “thanks to the wisdom, discipline and high civic responsibility of our people, we will be able to overcome all difficulties, effectively solve the problems that arise and, in the manner prescribed by law, hold this most important national event for our country, what are the presidential elections in Artsakh, taking all necessary measures to preserve the health of the population".
In his words, the most stringent sanitary and hygienic measures will be observed at all polling stations on the polling day.
According to the information headquarters with reference to the health ministry of the republic, disinfection has been carried out on all polling stations ahead of the elections.
Also, sanitary-educational work was carried out among the members of election commissions regarding the proper use of protective equipment and ensuring the rules of personal hygiene.
The Artsakh ministry of health has provided the Central Executive Committee with 71,500 masks, 14,000 gloves, 600 antiseptics, and Artsakh police with 500 masks, 1000 gloves and 60 antiseptics. Duty at all health posts continues. They are also provided with everything necessary.
According to the latest data on April 12, there were six people infected with coronavirus in Artsakh and 14 people were self-isolated. The first case of COVID-19 infection became known on April 7. -0---
