YEREVAN, March 23. /ARKA/. Eduard Sharmazanov, the Armenian parliament deputy speaker and a member the executive board of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, said Thursday that the party’s candidate for the prime-ministerial post is being discussed.
He told journalists after Armenian Republicans’ meeting, the party will make a decision “which will serve Armenia’s state and national interests”.
Sharmazanov declared referring to the words said by Serzh Sargsyan, Armenian president and the leader of the party, in the recent interview that the party has not discussed the matter before.
“In other words, we never discussed the matter either in the executive board or in the council’s session,” the party man said adding that his fellow partisans, however, “were voicing their opinions in separate conversations and in the media”.
“I personally have many times expressed my opinion and I declare the following: the Republican Party of Armenia, taking into account inside and outside challenges and as part of the powers the Constitution provides to the prime-minister, has no better-prepared and more responsible, wise and flexibly-reacting to challenges activist than the current president Serzh Sargsyan,” he said.
“This is my personal opinion, and my many fellow partisans share it.”
After praising Sargsyan, the party man repeated again that no institutional discussions have been held so far.
The constitutional reforms implemented in 2015 in Armenia have ensured transition to the parliamentary rule and provided the prime minister with sweeping powers. The amendments to the Constitution allow Serzh Sargsyan to continue ruling the country over the third term, if he will be elected as prime minister.
The premier will be elected by the ruling party or the ruling coalition on April 17, and the newly elected president, Armen Sarkissian will take the office on April 9. --0---
