Some 985 Armenians still missing after two Karabakh wars- Pashinyan
YEREVAN, April 7. /ARKA/. 'After the two Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) wars in 1992-1994 and 2020 autumn, we have a total of 985 missing persons,' Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced at a government meeting on Thursday.
He said 777 people were missing from the first war and 208 people from the second war in 2020 autumn.
The Prime Minister stressed that it was necessary to continue the work to find out what happened to these people. He also said that he had discussed this issue with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Brussels on April 6.
"One of the important topics of discussion was humanitarian issues. The head of the European Council Charles Michel stressed the need to release all captives. We also discussed the possibility and issues of cooperation in clarifying the fate of those considered missing," he said.
In a statement issued after hosting the Pashinyan-Aliyev meeting on April 6 Charles Michel emphasized the importance of humanitarian gestures by both sides to promote confidence and peaceful coexistence.
He stressed the need for the full and speedy resolution of all outstanding humanitarian issues, including the release of remaining detainees and comprehensively addressing the issue of missing persons, and stated that the EU is ready to support this endeavor. -0-
