State Department: peace in the region must include protection of rights and security of the people of Karabakh

YEREVAN, August 1. /ARKA/. The United States remains deeply concerned that Azerbaijan continues to keep the Lachin corridor closed to commercial, humanitarian and private vehicles, the U.S. Department of State said in a comment to the request of the Armenian Service of Voice of America.

The State Department said that the United States is aware of "the arrest' of Vagif Khachatryan (a resident of Nagorno-Karabakh), who was on his way to Armenia for medical treatment and was accompanied by an international humanitarian organization (ICRC). He was arrested by Azerbaijanis at a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor.

The State Department added that the halt in humanitarian traffic further worsens the humanitarian situation and undermines efforts to build confidence in the peace process.

"The free movement of commercial, humanitarian, and private vehicles through the Lachin corridor must be immediately restored. We have consistently stated that peace in the region must include the protection of the rights and security of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh. We welcome the dialog that is moving forward to this end," the ministry's commentary reads. -0--
