YEREVAN, May 25, /ARKA/. European Council President Charles Michel welcomed the first meeting of the Deputy Prime Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan on their international border on Tuesday.

"We warmly welcome first meeting of the border commissions held today (May 24) on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border to advance discussions on delimitation of inter-state border and how best to ensure stable situation. Tangible progress was made following trilateral meeting with Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders in Brussels on May 22,’ he twitted.

The border meeting brought together border delimitation commissions from both sides, each headed by a deputy prime minister. The delegations agreed to hold a second meeting in Moscow and a third in Brussels.

The sides confirmed their readiness to work on border delimitation and other relevant issues, including border security. Organizational and procedural issues of joint activities of the commissions were discussed too.

In a statement issued after that meeting Charles Michel said that Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to proceed with unblocking the transport links between the two countries, and also agreed on the principles governing transit between western Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan, and between different parts of Armenia via Azerbaijan, as well as international transport through communications infrastructure of both countries.

'Notably they agreed on principles of border administration, security, land fees but also customs in the context of international transport,' Michel wrote.

The leaders also agreed to advance discussions on the future peace treaty governing inter-state relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. -0-
