Armenian Parliament ratifies agreement on participation in EU crisis management missions

YEREVAN, November 28. /ARКА/. An extraordinary session of the National Assembly of Armenia has ratified the agreement between Armenia and the European Union on the terms of Armenia's participation in EU crisis management operations.

Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, who delivered the keynote address, noted that the agreement was signed on June 30, 2025, and aims to effectively utilize the European Union's experience and expertise in crisis management.

"In the context of the growing partnership between Armenia and the EU, cooperation in defense and security is of particular importance, which is why an EU monitoring mission was previously deployed in Armenia," Kostanyan noted.

He also stated that Armenia strives to be not only a beneficiary of security but also an active participant in security initiatives implemented by its European allies. The Deputy Minister noted that there are currently 20 EU missions active, whose mandates stem from relevant UN Security Council resolutions and requests from specific countries for the deployment of EU missions, as was the case with Armenia.

Regarding the financial aspects of the agreement, he explained that the costs associated with funding mission personnel in each country are borne by the participating states. The EU has the necessary instruments to support both civilian and military missions.

"Currently, we have not allocated funds for our participation, as we are in the process of creating a legislative framework for cooperation, and the final decision on participation in these 'missions' has not yet been made," Kostanyan stated.

He clarified that the agreement explicitly states that the EU issues an invitation, after which Armenia evaluates the possibility of participating in a specific mission, accepting or rejecting it.

"However, as with other political processes, preliminary consultations are underway regarding Armenia's potential participation in specific missions," Kostanyan said.-0-
