Turkey recalls ambassador from Paris in response to bill criminalizing denial of Armenian genocide

Turkey said it recalls its ambassador to France for consultations after French parliament passed a bill today criminalizing the denial of the 1915 Armenian genocide, RIA Novosti news agency reported citing Turkish news agencies.

YEREVAN, December 23. /ARKA/. Turkey said it recalls its ambassador to France for consultations after French parliament passed a bill today criminalizing the denial of the 1915 Armenian genocide, RIA Novosti news agency reported citing Turkish news agencies.

The National Assembly of France has passed a bill that makes it illegal to deny the 1915 Armenian genocide. The bill will see anyone in France who publicly denies the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians in the last years of the Ottoman Empire facing a year in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros. 

Turkey’s ambassador, Tahsin Burcuoglu said to Haber Turk TV channel that he was flying back to Ankara on Friday.
According to local media, along with the recall of the ambassador, Turkey will freeze contacts at the political level with France and impose sanctions against French companies.

According to official statistics, trade between Turkey and France is more than 13.5 billion euro, while French investments in Turkey are estimated 6.5 billion euros. There are about one thousand French companies in Turkey, including the top 30, which implement major projects in various industries - from the insurance sector to the automotive and aerospace, and seek new projects, including the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Black Sea province of Sinop, estimated at $20 billion.

French Airbus is a major supplier of commercial aircrafts to Turkey, almost half of aircraft fleet of the Turkish Airlines are Airbuses. According to Turkish media, in the event of sanctions, France may suffer serious losses in Turkey and lose 40-50 billion USD worth projects. -0-
