Two members of Congress request $100 million to aid refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh

YEREVAN, June 19. /ARKA/. Frank Pallone, Jr. (Democrat) and Nicole Malliotakis (Republican), two members of the US House of Representatives, have proposed an amendment to the FY25 SFOPS Bill that would potentially increase funding for Armenia by $100 million, the Armenian Assembly of America announced on Facebook on Wednesday.
This funding, if approved, will “support victims from Nagorno-Karabakh currently residing in Armenia, who were forced to flee their ancestral homeland amid Azerbaijan’s full-scale attack in 2023,” the statement said.
Azerbaijan launched a full-scale invasion of Nagorno-Karabakh on 19-20 September 2023 using artillery, UAVs, and aircraft. On 28 September, Samvel Shahramanyan, the leader of the self-proclaimed state, signed a decree that put the republic out of existence starting 1 January 2024.
Roughly a week after the invasion, all but a few ethnic Armenians left Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian government reported registering a total of 115,000 refugees.
