YEREVAN, October 20, /ARKA/.. ‘Our ultimate goal is a peaceful solution and resolution (of the conflict) between Armenia and Azerbaijan,’ said Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson of the U.S. Statement when asked at a press briefing to comment on the state of peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan following the deployment of EU monitoring mission in Armenia earlier this week.

Asked if he thought it will help to move the needle at this point to bring longtime peace to the region Patel said: ‘That is our hope. And that is something that the Secretary Blinken and Ambassador Reeker and others from in this building continue to push for as they discuss this issue.’

The agreement to send a civilian mission to Armenia was reached last week in Prague following hours of talks between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, France and the president of the European Council. Baku, which had previously rejected an EU proposal to deploy armed forces on its border with Armenia, did not object to an unarmed mission, while stressing that it would cooperate with it " to the extent it will be concerned.'

According to earlier reports, the mission will start its work in October, for a maximum period of two months. -0-
