YEREVAN, June 19. /ARKA/. The process of unblocking transport communications in the South Caucasus must proceed exclusively through peaceful means, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, commenting on the risks of a possible escalation in Armenia's Syunik region (bordering Iran and Azerbaijan) against the backdrop of events in Iran.

“The surest way to lift the transport blockade in the region is to resume cooperation as soon as possible within the framework of the trilateral working group co-chaired by the deputy prime ministers of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan,” Zakharova said at a press briefing on Thursday.

She stressed that at the last meeting of the Group in Moscow in July 2023, the parties were close to resolving virtually all practical issues.

In October 2024, Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan said that the trilateral Armenian-Russian-Azerbaijani commission on unblocking communications in the region was not functioning due to a lack of consensus.

Yerevan's position is that Armenia is ready to open communications if they are under its jurisdiction. In October 2022, Armenia's National Security Council introduced a project to create three checkpoints on the border with Azerbaijan - in Sotk, Yeraskh and Karaunj.-0-
