Ursula von der Leyen: finalization of peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan is a major step forward

YEREVAN, May 16. /ARKA/. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the finalization of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan an important step forward.

«EU President and I congratulated the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on the finalization of the peace treaty. It’s a major step forward. And we're looking forward to its swift signature.

She also said that 'The EU is ready to invest in regional connectivity – and bring the whole region closer together and closer to our Union.'

On March 13, the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan separately announced the successful completion of negotiations on a peace agreement

On the very day this became known, Armenia officially issued a statement calling to begin consultations to determine the place and time for signing the agreement.

However, Azerbaijan unexpectedly introduced two preconditions for signing the agreement. One precondition demands Armenia amend its Constitution, alleging it contains “territorial claims against Azerbaijan, which Armenia . views as groundless.

Azerbaijan's other demand is about dissolving the OSCE Minsk Group. Armenia responded by saying it is ready to jointly apply to the OSCE on this issue either after or simultaneously with the signing of the agreement.

Over 60 states and organizations welcomed the progress and urged the signing of the peace agreement. Pparticularly important. French President Macron, announced that there are no more obstacles on the path to regional peace and development.-0-
