YEREVAN, August 2. /ARKA/. The United States have urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to maintain the truce regime and refrain from revenge actions along the line contact where Armenian and Azerbaijani servicemen were killed in the recent violence, representative of US Department of State Marie Harf said.
The US is concerned over the escalation of violence along the line of contact that led to significant casualties on July 31, Harf said.
‘We extend our condolences to the families of those killed or injured and call on the sides to take immediate action to reduce tensions and respect the cease-fire. There can be no military solution to the conflict‘, she said as reported by Novosti-Armenia referring to RIA Novosti.
Retaliation and further violence will only make it more difficult to bring about a peaceful settlement, Harf said.
Deputy Department Spokesperson said the US urged the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan to meet at the earliest opportunity to resume dialogue on key issues. ‘We also call on the parties to accept the proposal from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Chairman-in-Office to enter into negotiations which can lead to the conclusion of a peace agreement. We remain committed to participating in the Minsk Group process and stand ready to help efforts to bring about a lasting settlement’, she said.
On Thursday Azerbaijani mass media reported about 10 servicemen killed in the military clash with the Armenian forces. The day before, two Armenian servicemen were killed in Azerbaijan’s attack on one of the military posts. Earlier, the Karabakh side reported about Azerbaijan attempts at subversion. –0--
