US welcomes efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region: Embassy in Armenia

YEREVAN, 24 June. /ARKA/. The U.S. welcomes good faith efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, the US Embassy in Armenia said.

"We welcome good-faith efforts to de-escalate tensions and achieve lasting and dignified peace in the region. The U.S. is ready to facilitate further steps in any form useful to the parties," the U.S. Embassy in Armenia said in response to an enquiry by Public Television of Armenia on how the U.S. views Armenian Prime Minister's proposal to establish a bilateral (Armenian-Azerbaijani) mechanism to investigate ceasefire violations.

The embassy stressed that the sides have made significant progress over the past year.

"We encourage the sides not to miss the moment, to continue the previous negotiations and to sign the peace agreement as quickly as possible," the embassy said.

It said that the (Armenian-Azerbaijani) conflict has no military solution. The Embassy noted that the ongoing violence disrupts Armenia's and Azerbaijan's progress towards achieving lasting and dignified peace.

The U.S. Embassy also expressed hope that Armenia and Azerbaijan will sign a peace agreement as quickly as possible, recognising each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity. -0--
