Vahagn Hovakimyan elected new chairman of Armenian Central Election Commission
YEREVAN, October 7. /ARKA/. By a vote of 65 the Armenian parliament has elected today Vahagn Hovakimyan as new head of Armenia's Central Election Commission.
Hovakimyan's candidacy was put forward by the ruling Civil Contract party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Since CEC members cannot have party affiliation or engage in political activities, Hovakimyan had earlier asked the Civil Contract party to suspend his party membership.
Hovakimyan was an MP from the Civil Contract and served as deputy chairman of the commission for state and legal issues.
The parliament also elected new CEC members: Anna Grigoryan, Zhiirayr Karapetyan, Nune Hovhannisyan, Arusyak Terchanyan, Silva Markosyan, and Armen Smbatyan.
Hovakimyan is replacing Tigran Mukuchyan, who was elected to the post on September 11, 2011, and reelected on October 6, 2016. -0-
