YEREVAN, December 17. /ARKA/. Armenia continues efforts on the exchange of war prisoners with Azerbaijan, Armenian Vice-Premier Tigran Avinyan said Thursday at a regular government meeting.
“This week, the first stage of the return of prisoners took place, but consistent work is underway to clarify the data on the prisoners in connection with the subsequent steps on the exchange,” Avinyan said.
In this regard, he said, negotiations are under way with the Azerbaijani side with the involvement of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Russian side.
Return of Prisoners
On December 14, with the mediation of Russian peacekeepers, an exchange of prisoners took place, and 44 officially Armenian compatriots were transported from Azerbaijan to Armenia. The commander of the Russian peacekeeping forces handed over 12 people to the Azerbaijani side.
Armenia agreed to apply the principle of "all for all" in the exchange of prisoners with Azerbaijan. It is proposed to create a mechanism by which, if new prisoners are found, each of the parties is obliged to return them without preconditions.
The exact data on the number of Armenians captured or missing during the hostilities in Artsakh is not known. Videos appear on the network in which Armenian soldiers and civilians in captivity in Azerbaijan are subjected to humiliation and humiliating treatment.
About New Captives
On December 15, video materials filmed by the Azerbaijani side about the capture of 100 Armenian servicemen began to appear on social networks and the media.
On December 16, the Artsakh ministry of defense announced that the previous evening, under unclear circumstances, it lost contact with the Defense Army units deployed in the direction of the villages of Hin Taher and Khtsaberd Hadrut. It is noted that the search work continued all night and in the morning.
On the same day, Artsakh Ombudsman Artak Beglaryan said that, according to the preliminary data collected by him, a subdivision of about 60 servicemen had gone missing in the direction of the Khtsaberd village of the Hadrut region these days. According to him, it is highly likely that they are the ones who were captured on the video published by the Azerbaijani side.
Later, Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan stated that in the direction of Khtsaberd, several dozen Armenian servicemen were captured by the Azerbaijani side, and currently the Ministry of Defense is clarifying all the circumstances.
