Yerevan Criminal Court of Appeals upholds lower court decision to arrest former Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan in absentia
YEREVAN, March 27. /ARKA/. The Criminal Court of Appeals in Yerevan has upheld a lower court decision to arrest former Armenian Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan in absentia, the press secretary of the Supreme Judicial Council Lilit Shaboyants said in a Facebook post.
The petition to annul the lower court’s decision was earlier submitted by the former defense minister's defense lawyer.
On February 9, 2023, the Office of the Prosecutor-General said Vigen Sargsyan, who served as defense minister from 2016-2018, was charged with abuse of power in connection with the distribution of government-funded housing to Armenian army officers.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, Vigen Sargsyan illegally ordered a Defense Ministry commission to allocate 29 apartments in Yerevan to military personnel and ministry officials who were not on an official waiting list.. It consequently asked a Yerevan court to approve an arrest warrant for Sargsyan, who now lives in the United States. -0-
