Yesterday Germany’s President President Joachim Gauck called the campaign against Armenians in Ottoman Turkey a planned crime that meets the definition of genocide. Gauck also said the German armed forces were involved in planning and even implementing deportations.

This way Germany has paid tribute to innocent Armenians killed in Ottoman Empire under the guise of the WWI, Nalbandyan said, as cited by the press office of the foreign ministry. Gauck’s statements is important for international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian genocide and is a valuable contribution to joint efforts for prevention of future genocides, Armenia’s foreign minister said.

The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide of the twentieth century.

According to Armenian and many other historians, up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed starting in 1915 in a systematic campaign by the government of Turkey.
